Health Care

Among the major concerns for student families is obtaining sufficient health insurance and quality health care. Following are some resources that may be helpful to your family as you navigate the health care system.

Students

UC Berkeley students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless they waive their enrollment because they have comparable coverage. Health care services are provided through University Health Services (UHS) at the Tang Center on campus. Students can use the services offered at the Tang Center whether or not they have SHIP. Some specific services offered through the Tang Center include:

Spouses and Children

UC Berkeley does not offer health insurance to spouses or children of students. There are, however, some California programs designed to provide insurance to low-income families:

  • MediCal provides insurance to adults and children who meet certain low-income requirements.
  • Healthy Families provides insurance to children (not adults) who don't qualify for MediCal but are still low-income.

If you do not qualify for MediCal or Healthy Families, then you will need to pay for your own insurance plan for the spouse and children in your family.

  • UHS offers information for students seeking insurance for spouses and dependents.
  • The City of Berkeley has a list of public health resources that could be useful to students.
