Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Am I guaranteed reappointment?

Answer: No. Your reappointment is contingent on a satisfactory job performance evaluation. In addition, it is expected that those selected for re-appointment will attain a minimum of 3 or higher in each individual section of the Spring 2008 performance evaluation. Final decisions for the reappointment process may be based on your performance evaluation, reappointment application, and your reappointment interview.

Question: Do I need to turn in an official transcript?

Answer: No, however you will need to turn in a transcript verifying your grades. We accept Bearfacts transcripts, only if your name is printed on the transcript (not hand-written). To print out this transcript, go to http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu and enter your student information. Then print an unofficial transcript with the box checked for "Show Student Name." Also note that you must have a 2.3 GPA or higher to be considered for a position - NO EXCEPTIONS.

Question: I applied last year to be an RA - do I have to submit a new application and new essays?

Answer: As a returner, your application does not require essays. You will be required to submit a returning hall staff application, which will include a resume and an application sheet. Detailed information is available on the application.

Question: I need some help with my resume - who can I talk to?

Answer: We recommend talking with the Career Center if you're interested in information on resumes. You can visit their website at http://career.berkeley.edu or visit at 2111 Bancroft Way (past Oxford Way). The Career Center is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Question: If I am currently an RA and want to apply for the TPA position, do I need to fill out a returning TPA application or a new TPA application?

Answer: You only fill out a returning application for a position you are returning to. To 'return,' you must have received/be receiving an academic year formal evaluation in that position. The EXCEPTION to this is that Theme Program Advisors who apply for a general Resident Assistant position would fill out a RETURNING application. An RA applying for a TPA position, or a TPA applying for a different TPA position, would need to fill out the NEW TPA application.

Question: If I want to apply to return to my current position and apply as a new PA, how many applications do I have to fill out?

Answer: You only need to fill out one returning application, but make sure to indicate on the first page that you are applying for both positions, and make sure to include all materials requested. If you wish, you may also submit multiple resumes, but be clear which resume is for which position.

Question: Will the room and board compensation affect my financial aid package?

Answer: It may affect your financial aid package. You will have to declare the compensation on your FAFSA. To find out more information about this please download the document below. If you have any questions about this, please contact: Michael Mathews, mmathews@uclink4.berkeley.edu, or at (510) 642-0617.
