Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is the Open Pool Application process?

Answer: Occassionally, student staff members will resign or leave their positions throughout the year. To fill these positions as they become available, Resident Directors will sort through applications received during the "Open Pool Application" process.

Therefore, if you're interested in being on hall staff, but missed the deadline or did not receive a position, this is your chance to apply again. You will be contacted if an opening becomes available.

Please note that if you have previously declined a position that you were offered from OSD, you cannot submit yourself to that position's pool (the exception is if the resignation was due to a study abroad/internship program, and you are interested in Spring Open Pool positions).

Question: Do I need to turn in an official transcript?
Answer: No, however you will need to turn in a transcript verifying your grades. We accept Bearfacts transcripts, only if your name is printed on the transcript (not hand-written). To print out this transcript, go to http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu and enter your student information. Then print an unofficial transcript with the box checked for "Show Student Name." Note that you must have a 2.3 GPA or higher to be considered for a position - NO EXCEPTIONS.
Question: I applied last year to be an RA - do I have to submit a new application and new essays?
Answer: Yes, while the open pool application is similar to the new hall staff application, the selection processes are separate and we need separate applications for each position. Therefore, even though you already applied, we still need a new application from you.
Question: I worked as a summer RA. Do I fill out the returning or new application?
Answer: To fill out the returning Open Pool application, you must have received an academic year evaluation in that position, or be applying for the Program Assistant position. The Program Assistant position is only available to individuals with one year of previous experience on Hall Staff.
Question: I need some help with my essays - who can I talk to?
Answer: If you live in the residential halls, we recommend visiting the Academic Center and the tutors that work there. Writing tutors can help polish your essays and ensure that your writing is up to par. If you live outside the residential halls, you might want to consider asking your friends, former RAs, and other people you know to read your essays and offer comments.
Question: I am interested in applying to the open pool for the Theme Program Advisor or Apartment Assistant position. Where is the information and application?
Answer: The open pool process for the TPA and AA positions are independent of the other positions. To submit your application for that position, please contact Erin Wixson at 643-8565 or via email and ask her for more information.
Question: Will the room and board compensation affect my financial aid package?

Answer: It may affect your financial aid package. You will have to declare the compensation on your FAFSA. To find out more information about this please download the document below. If you have any questions about this, please contact: Michael Mathews, mmathews@uclink4.berkeley.edu, or at (510) 642-0617.
